What is an epidural infusion ?

A fine plastic tube is inserted into the epidural space (the space between the spinal cord and the lining of the spinal canal). This is usually inserted in the operating theatre. The tube is connected  to a syringe of either local anaesthetic or a narcotic such as pethidine. The Syringe is place in a syringe pump. This device slowing injects small amounts of the drug into the epidural space. Either of these alternatives can give excellent relief of post operative pain and often almost completely abolish it.
