What is sciatica ?

Sciatica literally means pain in the leg. The pain can have many causes. The most important is nerve compression in the low back caused by either disc herniation or spinal stenosis. Pain caused by pressure on the nerve is usually felt above and below the knee. Occasionally  leg pain is termed 'referred pain' as its origin can be from the disc or arthritic facet joints. This pain is usually not felt below the knee.
